Our Lady Of Charity Lovingly known as Cachita to the people of
Cuba has a simple and beautiful story. In and around the year 1600 three local boys from Santiago Del Prado, which is presently known as El Cobre, were sent to sea to gather salt used to preserve the meat in the towns slaughterhouse. The boys were brothers Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos native Indians and Juan Moreno a young black slave about 10 years old.
Halfway across the Bay of
Nipe, a fierce storm threatened to sink their small boat and they prayed for divine help. The seas calmed down suddenly and the boys saw a white bundle floating in the distance atop a piece of wood. At first the boys confused it for a bird but as they got closer they saw that it was a small statue of the Virgin Mary. She was holding Baby Jesus in her left arm and carried a gold cross in her right hand. In the wood the words, Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad (I am the Virgin of Charity) were inscribed.
The boys gathered the statue noticing that despite the strong storm that had just passed and the high waves of the ocean it was not wet. The young men brought the statue back to their village and a chapel was built. Soon the chapel became a pilgrimage site and the town where her sanctuary was built was named El Cobre. In 1916 Pope Benedict XV declared Our Lady of Charity patroness of
Cuba.
Her feast day is celebrated September 8th the same day that the Afrocuban religion of Santeria celebrates the feast day of the Oricha Ochun. African slaves identified Cachita with Ochun the Oricha or Goddess of love, femininity and sensuality. To this day practitioners of the Yoruba Religion synchretize Ochun with the beloved Catholic image of Our Lady of Charity.
Regardless of whether you pray to Cachita or Ochun dont forget to light a yellow candle this September 8th. Ask them to look upon us mortals with eyes of charity and invite them to spread their love and kindness into our hearts. Nothing you request is too small or too big for them.

Nuestra Sra. de La Caridad Del Cobre Amorosamente conocida como Cachita para los Cubanos tiene una bella y sencilla historia. Alrededor de ao 1600 tres muchachos locales de Santiago del Prado, hoy como conocido como El Cobre, fueron enviado a cruzar la Baha de Nipe para buscar la sal necesaria para preservar las carnes de la carnicera local. Estos muchachos eran los hermanos Rodrigo y Juan de Hoyos Indios Nativos y Juan Moreno un joven esclavo de 10 aos de edad.A la mitad de camino una fiera tormenta amenazo con hundir su pequea canoa y ellos rezando pidieron ayuda Divina. De repente los mares se calmaron y los chicos vieron un pequeo bulto flotando sobre un pedazo de madera. Al principio lo confundieron con un pjaro pero cuando se acercaron vieron que se trataba de una imagen de la Virgen Maria. Esta llevaba al Nio Jess cargado en su mano izquierda y una cruz de oro en su mano derecha. En la madera estaban inscritas las palabras, Yo Soy la Virgen de la Caridad.Los muchachos tomaron la estatua sorprendidos de que a, pesar de la fuerte tormenta que acababa de pasar y las altas olas, estuviera completamente seca. Llevaron la estatua para el pueblo en el cual se le hizo una capilla. Pronto peregrinos de todas parte de la Isla habiendo escuchado la historia de la Virgen aparecida empezaron a visitar la Capilla y esta se convirti en un importante centro de veneracin. Se construyo un santuario llamado El Cobre. En el ao 1916 el Papa Benedicto XV declaro a Nuestra Sra. de La Caridad Patrona de Cuba.Su fiesta se celebra el da 8 de Septiembre. Este mismo da la religin Afrocubana de Santera celebra las fiestas de la Oricha Ochun. Los esclavos Africanos identificaban a Cachita con Ochun la Diosa del amor, femeninidad y sensualidad. Al da de hoy los practicantes de la Religin Yoruba sincretizan a Ochun con la amada imagen Catlica de La Virgen de la Caridad.No importa si usted le pide a Cachita o a Ochun, no se olvide de encenderle una vela amarilla el da 8 de Septiembre. Pdale que nos miren con sus ojos de Caridad e invtenlas a que rieguen el amor y la compasin que llevan en sus corazones con nosotros los mortales. Nada que usted le pida es muy pequeo ni muy grande para ellas.

YEMAYA HER MYSTERIES AND ATTRIBUTES

These attributes represent the security and support that she offers them in their life path.The Key This attribute reminds her followers that Yemaya possesses the Key to the Secrets of the Oceans. She holds the key to the Origin of life. She is willing to share her knowledge and wisdom with her children as they earn it. But she can also take it away.The Oars and Wheel A symbol of the control that Yemaya offers her children to overcome life circumstances. Also, a reminder that with her help, her children will be capable of steering their way through life.The Bangles Represent the Riches of the Ocean that Yemaya is capable of sharing with her Children and followers.The Mermaid Symbolizes the feminine power of the Ocean to give life and guard the secret of its origins. El mar, dador de vida y fuente de sustento, tambin puede ser temible y extremadamente peligroso.
