The literal meaning of Feng Shui is Wind and Water. It makes sense that it is called that because wind and water are very fluid. And, Feng shui is all aboutkeepng “chi” the life force of nature flowingthrough the use of color, symbols and the 5 basic elments (earth, water, fire, metal and wood).
So, ok cool! But how does it do that? Well, according to ancient wisdon the same way that wind and water cool and refresh our bodies it also replineshes “chi” (energy life force). If our homes, and businesses are full of clutter then the chi that travels through it is weakened. Therefore, Feng Shui is best described as the “Art of Placement” the way we place objects in our homes can improve the chi that travels through our space improving our health, money, relationships and life in general.
Feng Shui is a complicated science and it takes years of practice and dedication to master it. However, if you apply some very basic concepts you can start improving your life almost immediately. Let’s get started!
The Bagua - An octagon that shows the most appropiate areas in your house for love, fortune, fame, health and family. Align the black section of the Bagua with the front door so you can identify the different areas of your home.
Black(Center Front Door)- Career and Life path – Water Element- If you want to have a better job or more fun at your present one, It is good Feng Shui to have something associated with water like a small water fountain at the entrance of your home. Also, it is favorable to have a black object over your front door.
Gray(Right Front)- Helpful people and travel part of your home – Element is Metal -If you want to increase the flow of people that can make your life easier into your life and have safe journeys keep some small metal object in the front right part of your home. A beautiful metalchest may do the trick. Fill that chest with cherished photos and amulets and a list of your intentions (desires).
White (Center Right) – Creativity and Children – Element is Metal - This is the area of your home that has to do with creativity and children. Keeping this area neat is essential for ideas and clear thinking. It also helps with children problems. If you want to have children it is a good idea to keep a small toy or some other playful item in this part of the house.
Pink (Right rear portion of your home) – Love, Relationships and Marriage – Elements are earth and fire - This is the area of your home that has to do with romantic love. If you are looking for a relationship or want to improve the one you have it is a good idea to keep something pink in this part of your home. Also it helps tokeep an object that represents a loving couple in this part of your home.
Red (Central – Rear Area) – Fame and Reputation Area – Element is Fire – This is the area of your home where you will work on how others perceive you, your credibility, your reputation, the power you exercise. This is a great place to burn a red candle and tohang a high power red object such as a mirrored Bagua.
Purple (Left Rear Area) – Prosperity, Wealth, Money Abundance – Elements are Wood and Water – OK! This is a BIG ONE. You want more money? Check the wealth area of your home or office. Does it scream PROSPERITY? Or, does it just scream? This is where you want to make sure you have objects that remind you of the wealth you want to attract. Organize your space and keep it very neat. Have a sacred altar where you keep objects that represent abundance to you. A laughingbuddha surrounded with gold is a great reminder of the money we can have!
Green (Left Center Area) – Family Relationship – Element is Wood – This is the area of your home that represents your relationship with your family and close friends. It is a great area to place wood frames with happy pictures of those you love. The color green should be prominent in this area of your home.
Blue (Left Front Area) – Inner Wisdom, Knowledge,Meditation – Elementis Earth- This is a very sacred part of your home because this is where you go to acquire the wisdom to conduct your life. A small sanctuary that reminds you of the inner peace can be created just by placing a few sacred objects such as candles, incense or a meditative Buddha.
Yellow (The Center) – Health – Element is Earth – This is your center. Not an official part of the Bagua but the place in your home where you must be in complete balance so that the all the areas of your life work. Keep a potted plant in your living room center table. Light yellow candles and place some decorative rocks and stones to keep your health area in balance.
So there you have it. It’s simple and to the point but it covers some of the most basic principles of Feng Shui. Experiment, play, have fun with it! You don’t lose a thing but you may gain a world of benefit from this ancient philosophy.
